The Agency is an independent and independent state body, competent to supervise the legality of the activities undertaken during the processing of personal data in the territory of the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as the protection of the fundamental rights and freedoms of natural persons in relation to the processing of their personal data.

The Agency was first established as the Directorate for the Protection of Personal Data on June 22, 2005, when the first director was appointed by the Decision of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia (“Official Gazette of the Republic of Macedonia” no. 50/05).

With the Law on Protection of Personal Data (“Official Gazette of the Republic of North Macedonia” No. 42/20), the Directorate for Protection of Personal Data has renamed the Agency for Protection of Personal Data.

The Agency is responsible for its work before the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia.

The Agency is politically, financially, and functionally independent in the performance of its competencies, tasks, and powers in accordance with this law.

The Agency is managed by a director, who elects and dismisses the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia on the proposal of the Commission for Elections and Appointments of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia. The director of the Agency is elected for a period of five years, with the right to one more term. The Director of the Agency has a deputy elected and dismissed by the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia on the Commission’s proposal for a period of five years, with the right to one more term.

The agency submits an annual report on its work to the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia. If necessary and at the request of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, the director submits an additional report.

The Director represents and represents the Agency before the competent authorities and makes all decisions and decisions regarding the work of the Agency.
